The 12-Month South African Wedding Planning Checklist

12 to 10 months before

Set the budget, draft the guest list, and book your venue and marriage officer. These two bookings determine every other date.

9 to 7 months before

Book photographer, videographer, caterer (if not in-house) and decor. Cape Winelands photographers in peak season are often booked a year out.

6 to 4 months before

Order the dress and suiting. Gowns typically need four to six months plus alterations. Send save-the-dates, especially for destination weddings within South Africa.

3 to 2 months before

Confirm the menu tasting, finalise decor, and check that your marriage officer is registered with the Department of Home Affairs. Ask for their registration number.

1 month before

Confirm final guest numbers with the caterer, share the run sheet with every supplier, and confirm identity documents for the marriage register.

The week of

Hand over payments, pack the emergency kit, and confirm arrival times in writing with each supplier.
